Toddler & Child
For older children I have found that the best images are produced when the session is fun. Getting children to laugh is one of the things that I love about my job...and I don't believe that simply pointing a camera in a child's face is going to get the photos that you want. I take an unstructured approach to photography, preferring to follow my small clients around as they uncover new surroundings.
The best images are produced when the children are relaxed, comfortable and happy. Overly posed or staged smiles usually end up with gritted teeth and squinty eyes. It can take a while for children to relax and this is anticipated, every child and every session is different.
I take time to play with your child, encourage them to bring their favourite toy or costume to the session and just be silly (I am not easily embarrassed luckily!) Sessions may last up to two hours and include plenty of time for feedings, snack breaks and the like. I enjoy taking my time getting to know your child, because once they are comfortable with me the natural smiles and giggles arrive. While it may seem to all parties (especially the kids!) that we are just relaxing and having fun, the images captured at your session will reveal so much more--truly timeless moments that will become a part of your family's history.
I am often asked what should the children wear. From experience, plain white clothes (cotton dresses, white t-shirts) and jeans with bare feet work best. Remember, we want to focus on your child and busy clothes can be distracting. Avoid logos.
